F18-Creating for All: Accessibility in Engineering and Design

Creating for All Monday, November 27, 7-8:30PM Olin College, Academic Center, Room 109 Requests for refunds and credits must be made at least one week prior to the start of the class. Jeff Dusek, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering According to the World Health Organization, over one billion individuals worldwide live with some form of disability. Accessibility challenges have direct and lasting impact on health, independence, and overall quality of life. They influence the food we buy, the jobs we can obtain, the recreation we engage in, and the relationships we foster. For individuals living with disabilities, access to natural and built environments is a continual struggle that touches every aspect of daily living. While every individual deserves equal access to the spaces we inhabit, inaccessible environments, both physical and digital, remain the rule, not the exception, in many parts of the world. Until the application of universal design principles ensures equitable access to all, the practice of inclusive design provides the best opportunity to ensure individuals with disabilities can overcome some of these barriers. This talk will discuss current efforts at the Olin College of Engineering to improve accessibility through teaching, research, and partnerships with industry partners. Limited to 20.
