WS20-Bay Village: Boston's Hidden Neighborhood

Sold Out

RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 29, 5-6:30PM Bay Village: Boston’s Hidden Neighborhood   Boston by Foot Guide   Visit one of Boston's hidden neighborhoods, an area that has maintained its residential charm amidst the surrounding city. Originally called the Bay Street District, Bay Village was created by the filling of the mud flats leading into the Back Bay during the 1820s and settled by artisans and craftsmen, many of whom worked on the homes of Beacon Hill and the South End. The scaled-down brick Federal and Greek Revival row houses contribute to the sense of a small community within a larger urban environment.  In the early 20th century, Bay Village was the center of the New England film industry and was known as “Hollywood East.” The Cocoanut Grove, a local nightclub and former speakeasy, burned in a fire killing 492 people becoming the second worst single-building fire in U.S. history. Limited to 10. New date: Saturday, August 29                             New Time: 5:00-6:30PM Meet at the fountain in Statler Park, on Columbus Ave. and Stuart St.         Fee: $15

WS20-Mission Hill walking tour

RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 22, 5-6:30PM Mission Hill  Boston by Foot Guide   Mission Hill is a neighborhood of continuous transition, rebirth, and renewal. Part of the colonial town of Roxbury, originally written as ‘Rocksberry,’ due to the plentiful outcroppings of Roxbury Puddingstone found throughout the area. We will see remnants of those and of the quarries that took advantage of them. Over time, new modes of transportation and new landfill projects brought more residents of diverse backgrounds to the area. By the mid-nineteenth century, Mission Hill had taken its name from the “Mission Church” (the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Hope). We will explore the many wonderful public buildings of this fascinating enclave of Boston, along with some fragments of an industrial past. Now mainly a residential area, we will discover some interesting housing stock as we climb up to the top of the hill to finish the tour. Children in strollers are welcome at no charge. Limited to 20.   New date: Saturday, August 22                                       New Time: 5:00-6:30PM Meet outside the Roxbury Crossing MBTA Station on the Orange Line, 1400 Tremont Street Fee: $15

S20-Photography: Outdoor Lighting Techniques and Strategies

Outdoors with social distancing guidelines adhered to   Photography: Outdoor Lighting Techniques and Strategies High School-Adult Instructor: Steve Sulewski Learn to take better pictures outdoors by improving your understanding of light. We will start with lighting terminology and how to develop a keen sense of seeing light in ways that can be applied to the photographic image making process. This class will give you more confidence when shooting subjects on location with greater creative control and teach you how to be prepared in different environmental conditions. You will make observations, predictions, analyze results and execute new approaches. You will also learn how to prepare for a shoot and what to look for when scouting. Various tools will be introduced such as reflectors, soft boxes, speed lights, and mono lights with demonstrations on how to use them correctly. The concepts being taught can be applied to subjects such as people, pets, flowers, or insects. The idea is to be able to have the same kind of creative control you would have in the studio on location. To get the most out of the course, students should have a working knowledge of their cameras and an understanding of ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and exposure value.  Please note: The Monday and Tuesday classes will be from 10-11:30AM and the Wednesday and Thursday classes will be from 3-4:30PM so that students can learn about techniques for different light conditions. Bring a notebook, blanket, chair, and a camera that has manual control. Although not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring any lighting tools that you may have such as reflectors or flashes. Limited to 10.   Date: Monday, August 3-Thursday, August 6          Time: Monday and Tuesday: 10:00-11:30AM   Wednesday and Thursday: 3:00-4:30PM Location: Aburndale Cove, Newton Fee: $105
