F20-Walking Tour: Jamaica Plain

Walking Tour: Jamaica Plain Jamaica Plain is one of the smaller neighborhoods of Boston, with an unusually big history. JP (as it usually called by locals) encompasses only 3.07 square miles but offers a tremendously rich and varied narrative. Settled by Puritans in the 1630s and attracting wealthy Bostonians to build summer estates on the Jamaica Pond in the 18th century, JP was transformed in the 19th century by transportation. It became a “streetcar suburb” and earned the nickname “The Eden of America.” Come along to see one of the oldest houses in Jamaica Plain used as a military hospital at the start of the American Revolution, a selection of very impressive Victorian houses, and part of the Emerald Necklace park system. On this walking tour you will discover why Jamaica Plain is so well-loved by its residents. Limited to 10. Date: Sunday, October 18 Time: 1:30-3:00PM Meeting Location Meet your guide outside the Loring-Greenough House at 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain. Fee: $15 (plus a tip for the guide)

F20-Anxiety in Elementary School Children

Sold Out

CANCELED! Anxiety in Elementary School Children Michael Dodd, Ph.D   Anxiety or "worry" is normal in Elementary School children, and often adaptive too -- but not always --  so how do you know?   Michael Dodd, Child and Family Psychologist, will summarize normal development milestones for children from preschool through the elementary school years. During these years, children gradually leave behind the world of "make pretend" abilities and adopt real world skills like math facts, reading/writing journals, homework, and quizzes. The social landscape is changing too for children during these years. Imaginary friends are gradually being replaced by the quest for real life "buddies/bff's" who will reciprocate playdates, and friends made through competitive activites. You will learn how worry is adaptive during these years, i.e. how it performs a signal function, enabling kids to anticipate, prepare for, and prevent potential harm; and how anxiety can get out of whack, i.e. how worry can become detached from the harm it is intended to signal, and become free floating enabling drift into anxiety disorders. Common anxiety disorders in children will be discussed including separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, common phobias, panic attacks, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. You will also learn what treatment for anxiety usually looks like in elementary school children, including the need to approach vs. avoid worries, and how to do so incrementally with success. The presenter will offer clinical anecdotes and invite questions from the audience to enable group discussion. Limited to 20.   Date: Monday, November 2    Time: 7:30-9:30PM    Fee: $29

F20-Fermenting at Home

ONLINE Fermenting at Home  Ted Villa Fermented foods have been a part of the human diet for thousands of years, and they transcend cultures and continents. Initially utilized as a preservation method, fermentation increases the bioavailability of nutrients in food, and introduces helpful bacteria into our bodies that aid in digestion, and offer health benefits that we are only beginning to understand as scientists explore the microbiome.  If you have fresh fruits and vegetables, salt, water (sometimes), and a container, you have what you need to ferment food. This series of classes will introduce students to the basics of fermentation: what it is, what you need to do to ferment, how to do it, and what to look out for. Each class will have a primary theme, and then a short, “diversion,” with something related to fermentation, but slightly different from the main theme of the class. By the end of the session the student will have learned the basics of vegetable and fruit fermentation – which will hopefully lead to further exploration of this fascinating, fun, and delicious practice. A supply list can be found on the NCE website: www.needham.k12.ma.us/Community_Ed , under "Adult." Limited to 12. Date: 3 Wednesdays, October 14-28                                                         Time: 6:00-7:30PM  Fee: $69

F20-Sourdough at Home

ONLINE Sourdough at Home  Ted Villa If you’ve been on social media at all during the pandemic lockdown you’ve seen people’s attempts at sourdough bread. Undoubtedly, you saw some triumphs and you probably also saw some amazing disasters. If you were at all curious about what the hub-bub was all about, then this is the class for you.  This class will introduce you to how to create a starter, and once it’s started, how to feed it, care for it, and what to do with it. We’ll discuss what to do with “discard” – think of some of the best waffles you’ve ever had -- and then how to turn your starter into a levain and use that to make a loaf of bread. This class won’t guarantee that you make a perfect boule, or fabulous baguette every time you bake, but by the end you will have the basic skills you need to continue exploring the fascinating, and challenging world of sourdough bread, and you will never need to buy yeast again.  A supply list can be found on the NCE website: www.needham.k12.ma.us/Community_Ed , under "Adult." Limited to 12. F20-Stop the Mulch-scaping and Start Landscaping

ONLINE! Stop Mulch-Scaping and Start Landscaping!  Joanne Neale At some unknown point in time, mulch-- black, orange, brown, etc.-- became a part of the landscape, but wouldn't you rather have plants? Anywhere you can put mulch, you can dig a hole and put in a groundcover plant. Groundcover plants = living mulches. Think of the money, time and work you'll save on mulching every spring. And groundcovers are the go-to plant for low-maintenance gardens. Besides eliminating the need for mulch, they keep weeds from crowding in; they provide an extra layer of color and flowers; and they help maintain soil moisture, which means less watering. What's not to like about that? Come learn what to do before you start replacing your boring old mulch with fabulous new groundcovers and find out which groundcovers are right for your garden. Note: If you are not an experienced gardener, it would be helpful to first attend the Low Maintenance Gardening Workshop before signing up for this class.
