WS21-Walking Tour: South End

Walking Tour: South End This class will be held outside with social distancing guidelines observed.  Boston by Foot Guide One of Boston’s most beautiful neighborhoods, the South End was Boston's first big land-making project designed for new housing for Boston's growing upper class. It is based on an English plan, with lovely parks and squares framed by rows of houses. The layout and early South End homes were inspired by Charles Bulfinch, the great architect of the Massachusetts State House. The neighborhood boasts one of the largest collections of Victorian architecture in the country.   After Back Bay provided a newer and more fashionable place to live, the South End evolved into an area occupied by many different immigrant groups. Major institutions, like the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Boston City Hospital, came into the South End to serve these new populations. Now known for its wonderful restaurants, funky boutiques, artist lofts and theaters, there is so much to see and explore in this neighborhood. Limited to 10. Date: Sunday, June 13 Time: 1:30-3:00PM Meet your guide on the plaza across from the entrance to the Back Bay MBTA Station, on Dartmouth Street, Boston. Fee: $15

WS21-Catching up with Innovators: Tour of the Boston Fish Pier and Seaport

Catching up with Innovators: Walking Tour of the Boston Fish Pier and the Boston Seaport This class will be held outside with social distancing guidelines observed.  Laurie Zapalac, Ph.D. Join us as we explore the historic Boston Fish Pier and discuss the past, present and future of Boston’s  commercial seafood industry. Learn about how Boston’s access to the major fishing grounds of the  Atlantic played a pivotal role in the history of the Boston economy, while continued investment in infrastructure and technology, as well as access to key markets, have been critical to sustaining the  Boston Seaport’s place as a hub within the global commercial seafood industry through regulatory and  ecological change. Along the way, we will meet contemporary innovators who call the Seaport home, and hear how they are transforming both supply and demand for commercial seafood in creative ways. For those in the group interested in enjoying a “takeout” picnic in the seaport immediately following the tour, we will provide recommendations of area restaurants serving great seafood (and other things) and instructions for ordering ahead. Alternatively, please feel free to bring your own picnic items . Wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle. Limited to 12. WS21-Walking Tour: East Boston Evolutions

Walking Tour: East Boston Evolutions This class will be held outside with social distancing guidelines observed.  Stephen Landrigan This tour will cover a one-mile stretch of the East Boston waterfront that tells an ongoing story of innovation and transformation. From when it was first developed in the 1830’s until more than a century later, the East Boston waterfront was a major economic engine in the New England economy and home to an astonishing variety of industries. It was also the landing place for tens of thousands of immigrants seeking a new life in America. Major breakthroughs in maritime technology happened there, from the invention of the world’s fastest clipper ships to the coming of steam-powered iron vessels that replaced them. The waterfront itself was continually reshaped as mud flats were filled in and ever-larger wharves were extended into deeper water. In the second half of the 20 th Century, the East Boston waterfront declined into obsolescence and became a ghost-scape of derelict wharves and abandoned industrial buildings from which it is only now emerging. Upscale housing has spread across the waterfront, built with a cautious eye at rising sea levels.   The tour will use vintage visuals to provide a sense of what was once in the neighborhood and to raise the question whether in future decades the only constant is likely to be change. Following the tour, enjoy an optional, casual outdoor dinner with the guide in Maverick Square. Limited to 12. Date: Thursday, June 17 Time: 5:30-7:00PM Meeting spot: Across the street from the Maverick Sq. T station Fee: $39

WS21-Clay Your Way: Make Your Own Hanging Planter

ONLINE Clay Your Way: Make Your Own Hanging Planter This is a virtual class, with a project kit for 1-2 people to be purchased separately and picked up from the instructor’s Needham home. The finished planter will be brought to the instructor’s home for firing and picked up from there once the firing is done. Samantha “Sam” Hoff Get creative, and with step-by-step instructions, make something beautiful for your home or to give as a gift.  During this 1.5-hour virtual class, you will create your own hanging ceramic planter. With the instructor’s guidance, you will hand build a planter from ceramic clay, and learn some ways to hang your planter. Finally, you will be shown how to apply underglaze to decorate your piece before it is fired in the instructor’s professional kiln. This class won’t  guarantee that you’ll create a museum-quality masterpiece, but by the end you will have a functional planter, and the basic skills needed to continue creating “crafterpieces” and exploring the vast world of ceramic art. Note: your planter must be fired in a kiln to make it waterproof, but as long as you don’t get it wet (or drop it),  your piece will last years and years…maybe forever. The price of firing is included in the $60 kit fee, and each  kit has enough clay for 1-2 people depending on how large a piece/how many pieces are built. Order your kit from [email protected] .  Limited to 15. Date: Tuesday, March 16 Time: 6:30-8:00PM Fee: $25

WS21-Quitting the Comparison Game: Freeing Yourself and Your Children from Unnecessary Comparison

ONLINE FOR NEEDHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS PARENTS/GUARDIANS OR NEEDHAM RESIDENTS ONLY Quitting the Comparison Game: Freeing Yourself and Your Children from Unnecessary Comparison Caryn Bello, Psy.D. This school year is like no other we have ever experienced and is unlike anything parents, teachers, or students have ever imagined. Playground games look different than expected, hallway conversations are muffled behind masks, and opportunities for club and sports activities have been significantly altered.  The stark difference between expectation and reality can be crushing. As Teddy Roosevelt eloquently stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” So, why then, are humans innately driven to compare? The changing landscape in the midst of this pandemic exacerbates the negative impact of comparison. In this course, you will learn what drives comparison, what types of comparisons are helpful and how to tame the urge to compare when it is harmful to mental well-being. You will gain strategies to foster meaningful connections to self, others, and your own experience to support psychological health, relationships, and personal growth. Limited to 25.
