Commerce Coffee is a student-run business at Cleveland High School.

At Cleveland High School we have come to realize that many students lack adequate training and preparation for transitioning to jobs, independent living, and civic life after high school. This is due to the lack of opportunity these students have for practical, hands-on, in-context practice that would allow them to develop the proficiencies necessary to maintain employment, manage their lifelong vocational learning, and meet the expectations of business and public service. To provide more opportunities for our students, Cleveland High School has established a vocational program in the form of a student-run business. Commerce Coffee is an opportunity for students to practice work skills including accounting and money handling, budgeting, practical measurement and math, scheduling, learning and implementing health-department and other regulatory protocols, public relations, advertisement and marketing, technical writing, supply chain management, public speaking and presentation, vocational leadership, retail management, and all practical aspects of business economics. Partnerships with local businesses provide community education. Opportunities for learning the soft skills necessary for employment and avocational success include communication with coworkers, supervisors, and the public; self-management through the use shift checklists and schedules to self-monitor behavior and assure quality; self-advocacy; and emotional regulation. Opportunities for learning independent living skills include personal time management, personal finance, and practical communication. Additionally, like any business, the Commerce Coffee provides opportunities to engage in public awareness events, sponsor the arts, and promote civic involvement. In short, this program provides a previously missing vocational program for our students most in need.
